To meet the needs of people who want to store their data safely in Southeast Asia, Amazon says it is opening cloud regions there.

According to Werner Vogels, Chief Technology Officer of Amazon, “Many of our customers have been asking for this.” In order to meet local data store needs or protect personally identifiable information, for example, they really wanted something local.

Worldwide, Amazon Web Services, Amazon’s own cloud computing service, is the biggest cloud service provider. More than 30% of all cloud spending in the world has gone to Amazon.

A place where several Amazon Web Services data centers are grouped together is called an Amazon Web Services region.

Vogels talked about how wide the need is by saying, “It’s not just startups that want that.” There are also government bodies and large businesses. Government agencies probably want to go digital too.

That’s why it’s important for them to have these technologies in the country so that they can serve their customers or people better, he said.

Amazon said a few months ago that it would be growing to Malaysia, and it looks like the company is still meeting customer needs in countries other than the US. AWS works in a lot of places, like China, North America, South America, Europe, the Asia-Pacific area, South Africa, and the Middle East. Vogels said this is where they want to put the most money right now to meet demand and improve protection.

It’s very important for companies and governments in the area to be able to keep people safe in our compute regions, he said.
