The Washington football team finally decides to change their name to Washington Commanders after a year of searching.

The team’s president, Jason Wright, revealed the renaming news in his appearance on NBC’s “TODAY” program, Wednesday in the morning. The search for the team’s new name took more than a year after they ditched their former name “the Redskins” in July of 2020 after having an issue with corporate sponsors including FedEx as the name of the team has always been considered a racist slur for Native Americans.

“It’s a name that has the weight and meaning befitting a 90-year-old franchise. It’s also something important that we could own, and grow for the next 90 years,” Wright said during his statement with the network.

Wright added that the new identity and branding of the team would increase the value of the club since it is still continuously repairing its reputation after allegations of workplace misconduct within the club became an issue in the past.

The franchise is expected to get on with a new stadium to replace the FedEx Field after making headlines with its broken sewer pipe, including a railing that collapsed after the team loss against Philadelphia Eagles on January 02.

“The clock is ticking on that. That is a major endeavour and an economic driver not just for the club, but for the entire region,” Wright said in an interview with CNBC in 2020
