Joe Biden’s two-year-old tweet stating Vladimir Putin was afraid of him has come back to haunt him two years later as Russia infiltrates Ukraine’s eastern territories.

On February 21, 2020, Biden tweeted, “Vladimir Putin doesn’t want me to be President. He doesn’t want me to be our nominee. If you’re wondering why — it’s because I’m the only person in this field who’s ever gone toe-to-toe with him.”

After precisely two years, Putin acknowledged the independence of two Ukrainian regions. According to a CBS News tweet, Putin is “no longer open to talking with the West to find a diplomatic solution” with this recent move.

As per New York Times, Putin acknowledged the so-called Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics during an anti-Ukraine speech. According to the orders, military soldiers would be sent to the areas to conduct “peacekeeping missions.”

Biden issued an executive order banning US citizens’ entry to Ukraine’s “so-called DNR and LNR territory” response to Putin’s comments.

When reporters inquired White House press secretary Jen Psaki, he claimed that the administration “anticipated a move like this from Russia and are ready to respond immediately.”

“President Biden’s order was largely “symbolic” because “there is already next to none of this too, from, or in Donetsk and Luhansk occupied territories,” a Buzzfeed News correspondent named Christopher Miller wrote.

“These measures are separate from and would be in addition to the swift, and severe economic measures we have been preparing in coordination with Allies and partners should Russia further invade Ukraine,” Psaki said.
