Republican Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is pushing to impeach Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over his failure to secure the southern border.
On Thursday, Greene introduced her impeachment resolution from the House floor, arguing that Mayorkas had failed “to secure the border and protect States against invasion” by millions of illegal immigrants, which then led to “high crimes and misdemeanors.”

“The ongoing invasion at our southern border is a direct national security threat against the States and against the citizens therein,” she read from the resolution, referencing the “approximately 10 million illegals” who have come into the country since Biden took office in January 2021.
This comes as the U.S. has been seeing massive migrant numbers since President Joe Biden announced last year that he would be lifting “Title 42,” a controversial border policy implemented by former President Donald Trump back in March 2020 that allowed the border agency to turn migrants away.
Since then, nearly 10 million migrants have been stopped by U.S. immigration authorities, including 1.8 million known “gotaways,” according to Customs and Border Protection figures cited previously by House Republicans. The numbers are likely to increase now that “Title 42” has been lifted.
According to Greene’s resolution, Mayorkas is violating the Secure Fence Act of 2006 and infringing on American citizens’ rights to protection against invasion as guaranteed by the Constitution’s Article IV Guarantee Clause.
It also cites the secretary’s violations of the Immigration and Nationality Act by “[practicing] catch and release policies,” the termination of contracts for border wall construction and the Trump administration’s Remain in Mexico and Title 42 policies for migrant expulsion were undermined, among other things.
In response to the resolution, a DHS spokesperson affirmed that Mayorkas has done everything to control the southern border crisis while blasting Greene’s “reckless impeachment charades.”
“While the House Majority has wasted months trying to score points with baseless attacks, Secretary Mayorkas has been doing his job and working to keep Americans safe,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
“Under his leadership, the Department of Homeland Security is stopping unprecedented amounts of fentanyl from entering the country, countering threats from the Chinese government, helping communities recover from natural disasters, and working to protect our nation from cyberattacks, terrorism, and targeted violence,” they continued.
