First Lady Jill Biden is being slammed by the Latino community after she likened the minority group to “breakfast tacos” in her speech.
Speaking at the annual UnidosUS conference in San Antonio, Texas, Biden made some insulting comparisons to the organization’s founder, Raul Yzaguirre.
“Raul helped build this organization with the understanding that the diversity of this community, as distinct as the bodegas of the Bronx, as beautiful as the blossoms of Miami, and as unique as the breakfast tacos here in San Antonio, is your strength,” she said.
Her remarks sparked criticism among members of the community, including the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, who called out the First Lady for stereotyping Latinos.
“We are not tacos. Our heritage as Latinos is shaped by a variety of diasporas, cultures, and food traditions, and should not be reduced to a stereotype,” the organization said.
This comes as President Joe Biden’s popularity continues to decline, especially in the Hispanic community.
A survey released by NBC News recently revealed that Hispanic voters in support of the president dropped from 48 percent to 39 percent, while women voters declined from 51 percent to 44 percent — which shows an alarming precedent for the Democratic party, as these demographic groups are key for them.
Infighting within the Democratic Party is also worsening with New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez throwing a fit over fellow party members using the term “Latinx.”
“I also have a mini-rant about this because there are some politicians, including Democratic politicians, that rail against the term ‘Latinx.’ And they’re like, ‘This is so bad, this is so bad for the party,’ like blah, blah, blah,” she said during an Instagram Live session. “And it’s almost like it hasn’t struck some of these folks that another person’s identity is not about your reelection prospects.”
A December poll from a Democratic firm found that 30% of potential voters are less likely to support a politician who freely uses the “Latinx” term, while only 2% of Hispanic respondents use the term.
Democrats fear that the squabble within the party, along with the overall dissatisfaction with the Biden administration, could cost them their majority in Congress during the November 8 midterm elections.
